Temperament Testing: Setting Puppies Up for Success

At Dancing Daisies, we believe every puppy is wonderfully unique and their personality matters just as much as their looks. That’s why we include temperament testing as a core part of our program. This process helps us understand each puppy’s natural tendencies and match them with families where they will thrive.

What Is Temperament Testing?

Temperament testing is a structured, age-appropriate evaluation that looks at how a puppy responds to new experiences, people, sounds, obstacles, and gentle stressors. It gives us a clear picture of their:

Confidence level
Human/social engagement
Sensitivity (sound, touch, environmental)
Independence vs. people-oriented behavior
Energy level
Trainability and focus
Recovery time after surprises
Resilience in new environments

Why Temperament Testing Matters

No two puppies are the same. Some are adventurous and bold, others sweet and gentle, some cuddly, some playful. Temperament testing allows us to:

Place puppies in homes where their personalities shine

Identify which puppies may do best with kids, active homes, or quieter environments
Begin early individual training based on each puppy’s needs

How We Test

We use a combination of structured evaluations and everyday observations, including elements of systems like:

Volhard/Puppy Aptitude
Badass Breeder (B.A.B.)
Avidog-inspired handling
Our own day-to-day behavioral notes

Testing is done around 7 weeks of age, when puppies are developmentally ready and before they head into their new homes.
