Bernedoodles are a mixed breed created by crossing Bernese Mountain Dogs with Poodles. This intentional crossbreeding aims to combine the desirable traits of both parent breeds. Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for their gentle and friendly nature, while Poodles are highly intelligent and low allergenic. By blending these characteristics, Bernedoodles often exhibit a loving temperament, intelligence, and a low allergenic coat.
They come in various sizes, including standard, miniature, and toy, depending on the size of the Poodle parent. Bernedoodles are recognized for their striking appearance, marked by a combination of the Bernese Mountain Dog’s distinctive tri-color coat and the Poodle’s curly or wavy hair. These dogs have gained popularity as family pets due to their friendly disposition and adaptability to various living environments.
So, What's an Ultra Bernedoodle?
An Ultra Bernedoodle is a unique and carefully bred type of Bernedoodle that carries a higher percentage of Bernese Mountain Dog than the traditional F1 or F2 generations. They are in a category all of their own: ULTRA.
These are not your average Bernedoodle. Most Bernedoodles are classified by generation:
- F1: 50% Bernese Mountain Dog x 50% Poodle
- F2: F1 Bernedoodle x F1 Bernedoodle (still ~50/50 mix)
- F1B: 75% Poodle x 25% Bernese (F1 Bernedoodle x Poodle)
While these are common, our Ultra Bernedoodles are not part of this generational system.
Why? Because We’ve Reversed the Trend. Rather than increasing the Poodle percentage (as is often done for allergy-friendly coats), we intentionally increase the Bernese Mountain Dog percentage to produce pups with:
- A more Bernese-like look and temperament
- A stockier, more mountain-dog build
- Wavy or slightly curly coats (not tight curls)
Our Ultra Bernedoodles often carry 75% or more Bernese Mountain Dog genetics, giving you a companion that truly captures the heart and appearance of the Bernese, while still benefiting from the added health and longevity the Poodle mix provides.
With this you get the best of both worlds! You’re not just getting a “mix”, you’re getting a thoughtfully bred, family-focused dog with the soul of a Bernese and the smarts of a Poodle, with a stunning look all its own.
Furnished vs. Unfurnished Bernedoodles: What’s the Difference?
If you’re new to Bernedoodles, you may come across the terms “furnished” and “unfurnished.” These describe coat genetics... and they make a big difference in how your Bernedoodle will look, shed, and feel as an adult.
What Does “Furnished” Mean?
Furnished Bernedoodles carry the furnishings gene, which gives them that signature Doodle “teddy bear” look, complete with fluffy faces, expressive eyebrows, and soft beards. This gene also helps produce the low-shedding, allergy-friendly coats that Bernedoodles are so loved for.
What to Expect:
- Wavy to curly, soft coat
- Low to non-shedding
- The classic “Doodle” appearance
- More allergy-friendly
- Require regular brushing and grooming to prevent matting
What About Unfurnished Bernedoodles?
Unfurnished Bernedoodles do not carry the furnishings gene. They tend to have smoother or slightly wiry coats, little to no facial fluff. and more of a Bernese Mountain Dog or Retriever look.
What to Expect:
- Easier grooming, less trimming and brushing
- Shed more
- Not allergy-friendly
- Lack the soft, fluffy “teddy bear” Doodle appearance
- Coat texture can be more wiry or coarse (more like a Terrier)
- May have a stronger natural doggy odor due to increased shedding and oils

Both furnished and unfurnished Bernedoodles can be wonderful companions, but for families looking for that soft, fluffy, low-shedding Doodle look and feel, a furnished Bernedoodle is typically the best fit.
